English Premier League 26/27: All facts, records and stats ahead of new season

The Premier League returns for the 2026/27 campaign with Arsenal launching their title defence, three promoted sides rejoining the top flight, and world-class talent gathering across the competition.
Following a dramatic 2025/26 season, Arsenal enter as champions for the first time since 2003/04. Their victory made them the third distinct champion in three years, following Manchester City in 2023/24 and Liverpool in 2024/25.
A record nine English clubs will compete in European tournaments this season, including five in the UEFA Champions League after England topped UEFA’s coefficient standings. Last season saw Aston Villa win the Europa League and Crystal Palace capture the Conference League.
The previous campaign was defined by late drama, with a record 115 goals scored in the 90th minute or later. Competitiveness spanned the table, as newly promoted Sunderland finished seventh to secure Europa League football, while Bournemouth reached sixth for their maiden European qualification. Meanwhile, West Ham United suffered relegation despite tallying 39 points.
Coventry City, Hull City, and Ipswich Town rejoin the top division this year. Coventry return under manager Frank Lampard after a 25-year absence, Ipswich return after one year under Gary O’Neil, and Hull City secured promotion via a dramatic play-off final.
Individual milestones also set new benchmarks last season. Erling Haaland became the fastest player to hit 100 Premier League goals in 111 matches, while Bruno Fernandes set a single-season assist record with 21.
Ahead of the opening fixture, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta emphasised his squad’s determination to retain the crown.
“We are very conscious of what it’s going to take to deliver that. But I feel the ambition, I feel the desire, and I feel the ability and the conviction around the team that we can do it. I think we’ve been extremely consistent in the last four or five years now, in terms of all the performances, in terms of the growth of the club, in terms of a lot of factors that are really relevant to put ourselves into that bracket or category,” he said.
