FIFA WC 2026: Tempers flare as Argentina edge England in fiery semifinal clash

The 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal showdown between Argentina and England turned into a feisty affair, featuring aggressive tackles and angry standoffs throughout the first half.
England playmaker Jude Bellingham was targeted early on, receiving a heavy tackle from Leandro Paredes just two minutes after kickoff. The Argentine midfielder appeared to strike Bellingham with an elbow shove. Moments later, Elliott Anderson clattered into Lionel Messi, prompting a challenge from Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez.
Much to the frustration of the England coaching staff, the referee decided against giving any early cards.
Anderson earned the Three Lions another set-piece in the seventh minute following a foul by Giuliano Simeone, though England was unable to convert the opportunity.
Tension escalated again in the 13th minute when Anderson and Fernandez squared off, drawing in teammates Morgan Rogers and Paredes. England was left angry by Fernandez’s tackle, starting a protest from manager Thomas Tuchel on the sideline, yet the official still withheld his cards.
The referee finally made his first booking in the 38th minute, cautioning Anderson for a tackle on Messi, which triggered another round of shoving between the rival players. Shortly before the break, Argentina’s Lisandro Martinez also entered the book in the 42nd minute for pulling back Rogers.
Tensions boil over post-match as Argentina and England players clash
Tempers boiled over completely after the final whistle of the Three Lions’ agonising 2-1 defeat. Bellingham was caught up in a tense confrontation with several Argentine players in Atlanta.
The England midfielder walked up to Valentin Barco, Lautaro Martinez, and Julian Alvarez, who were standing arm-in-arm celebrating. Bellingham appeared to hit Barco on the back of his head, provoking an immediate, angry reaction. Barco shoved Bellingham away as the Madrid star continued to trade words. The incident threatened to spiral out of hand before veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi stepped in to separate Bellingham from the group.
The match itself was defined by relentless physical play and post-game rivalry, but Argentina ultimately secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory to book their spot in the final. Lionel Scaloni’s men will now battle Spain for the trophy on Sunday, while England is set to face France in the third-place playoff.
