Lionel Messi donates 80,000 euros for Madrid wildfire recovery efforts

Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi has donated a sum of 80,000 euros to the reconstruction efforts in areas of Madrid. Earlier, people witnessed extremely destructive wildfires that swept through Madrid in recent weeks.
The President of Madrid regional government, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, took to social media to announce Messi’s contribution. She also thanked him for the kind act in support of the affected communities.
“Leo Messi has donated €80,000 for the #reconstrucción of the Sierra Oeste de Madrid. I want to thank him and tell him that the people of Madrid hope to welcome him soon to give him the applause he deserves,” read her post’s caption.

The donation comes as Spanish authorities continue their efforts to manage the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that swept through the Sierra Oeste region of Madrid.
Earlier, wildfires continued to spread across southern Europe, triggering mass evacuations and emergency operations in Spain, France and Italy as authorities battled rapidly advancing blazes intensified by extreme heat and strong winds.
Spain had declared a national emergency as the wildfires affected the communities in the province of Avila along with the communities near Madrid.

Recently, Argentina suffered a loss in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Spain.
Spain edged Argentina 1-0 after extra time, bringing an end to Messi’s title defence and completing an impressive unbeaten campaign in which La Roja conceded just one goal in eight matches.
The defeat signalled the end of a remarkable era for Argentina and Messi, who guided his country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title and Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024.
Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero of the final clash, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute with a powerful strike into the roof of the net beyond Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
