Thomas Tuchel labels these goalscorers as 'sharks' of competition

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against DR Congo, England registered a dramatic victory by 2-1 at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia.
During the match, England’s skipper Harry Kane registered a brace, which took his goal tally to five in the ongoing global showpiece. With this, the English skipper is sharing the second position with Norway’s Erling Haaland on the list of leading goal scorers in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Kane is trailing by just one goal to go level with joint leading goal scorers France’s Kylian Mbappe and Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the ongoing edition of the marquee event.
When asked if all these stars share a common trait, England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel labelled them as “sharks” of the competition.
“They’re all sharks. If they smell blood, they come and score. These big guys in this World Cup, do they watch each other, and then they go like ‘no, not with me’ and then I score, and then I do a hat trick, and then you go ‘what is going on?’ I mean, crazy,” he said according to ESPN.
The coach heaped praise on his team’s skipper by saying that he is happy that Kane plays for England.
“[Kane is] so, so good. He’s our captain, he’s our leader, and decides football matches with unbelievable finishes today twice. The second one was just a brilliant goal, and happy that he’s [our player],” said the 52-year-old coach.
The two goals also helped Kane surpass Pele and draw level with French legend Just Fontaine, climbing to joint-sixth on the tournament’s all-time top-scoring list.
The 32-year-old footballer also became the first England player to score five or more goals at two different FIFA World Cups. Additionally, he, along with Marcus Rashford, made their 15th World Cup appearances during the match. This is the most by any England’s men’s outfield players.
