Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka caught plenty of eyeballs recently, not for his performances on the pitch, but for mistakenly entering Ecuador’s team bus following his side’s shock 1-2 loss at the World Cup on Thursday.
In a viral online video, Goretzka is seen climbing into the wrong bus before realising that the German team bus was parked right next to it. Social media was quick to have a laugh at the veteran midfielder’s expense, with one Reddit user writing: “If you can’t beat them, join them.” Another user joked: “Shocking positional awareness.” One X user chimed in saying: “He wanted to join the winning team.”
The Bayern Munich player, who has won 72 caps for his country, is yet to start a game in this World Cup. He has played only 22 minutes so far across three games as coach Julian Nagelsmann has preferred a midfield pivot of Aleksandar Pavlovic and Felix Nmecha.
