India’s national football team is set to face two-time World Cup champions Uruguay in an international friendly on October 6 at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The high-profile encounter serves as the third marquee home fixture scheduled for the Blue Tigers during the upcoming FIFA international window running from September 21 to October 6.
The showdown against Uruguay takes place just three days following India’s fixture against five-time World Cup winners Brazil at the same iconic venue in Kolkata.
Additionally, the Indian team will kick off their home campaign against 44th-ranked Panama on September 26 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, marking their return to the venue for the first time since their 2023 SAFF Championship triumph.
Announcing the marquee lineup, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) shared in an official statement on Thursday.
“The Indian men’s national team will welcome another heavyweight of world football to Kolkata, with two-time FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay set to face India in an international friendly match at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on October 6, 2026. The fixture will be India’s third high-profile international friendly of the window,” the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said in a statement on Thursday.
“La Celeste’s arrival in Kolkata adds another major fixture to an unprecedented run of international football for Indian fans, with three World Cup-playing nations, Panama, Brazil and Uruguay, set to visit the country within the same FIFA window.”
Heavyweight opponents and World Cup context
Uruguay, currently ranked 20th in the world rankings, won the World Cup in 1930 and 1950 and reached the semifinals on three occasions (1954, 1970, and 2010). At the 2026 World Cup, Uruguay suffered a group-stage exit following 1-1 and 2-2 draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, along with a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain. Interestingly, Uruguay’s current head coach, Diego Forlan, previously played in India for Mumbai City FC in 2016.
Following this home series, the Blue Tigers will travel overseas to face New Zealand in twin away friendlies on November 12 and 15. This tour will complete a historic international football season for India.
